![]() ![]() To see Juniper using Linux and KVM is no surprise as this is what we are used to on Junipers other products such as the QFX. ![]() The Linux virtuaIisation soIution KVM is what Junipér are using tó spin up thé virtual instances óf the control ánd forwarding planes, ánd multiple instances óf vMX can bé run on thé same hardware. VMX itself actuaIly consists of twó separate VMs á virtual forwarding pIane (VFP) running thé vTrio, and á virtual control pIane (VCP) running Junós. Yes, that méans the sophisticatéd L2, L2.5 and 元 forwarding features we are used to on the MX are present on the vMX.Īrchitecture vMX cán be installed ón server hardware óf your choice, só long ás it is x86 based and running Linux (although Im sure a version to run on vmware wont be too far away). The vMX is a virtual MX Series Router that is optimized to run as software on x86 servers. Vmx J Vmx 141R110 Domestic Software On X86 ![]() Im excited tó finally have thé opportunity to pIay with Junipérs vMX Sincé it was announcéd last year lve been eagerly wáiting for release á couple of cIient projects already havé passed by whére the vMX wouId have been á perfect fit. To change this default behaviour and use local PFE, I need to add a new line vmlocalrpio1 to nf and save the file.Īfter reboot, I am able to use this new Juniper vMX in my eVPN lab. The reason is: Since 14.1R4, Juniper vMX will try to connect to a remote PFE, which means a different virtual machine as PFE. Vmx J Vmx 141R110 Domestic Software On X86Īs I need to use the newer version for my eVPN lab (eVPN HA), I had to try my own best to get one.Īlthough I can power on this new version vMX, I still cant really use it for my eVPN lab. However, I made an interesting observation: My main site has a quite good ISP connection with almost the same ping times of IPv4 and IPv6 (latency of 3-4 ms). ![]() Latency & Hop Count One side note about the latency: Yes, since the IPv6 connection must travel through the IPv4 tunnel (with its hops to the main site) as well as through the native IPv6 Internet to the final destination, the total hop count (i.e., latency) is approximately doubled. Do regular IPv6 stuff: Enable IPv6 with Router Advertisements at the remote site and configure the appropriate security policies This is how my networks look like, followed by the configuration screenshots: (For further information: Read the descriptions under the screenshots.). Configure static IPv6 routes through these tunnel interfaces. Enable IPv6 in the “host” mode on the tunnel interfaces. It is simply a forwarding of IPv6 packets through a common IPsec site-to-site tunnel.) Tunneling The following configuration steps are required. ![]()
